About Karyn

BIO
Karyn Fendley draws inspiration from the natural world, whether the minutiae of her environment, or an aerial view. Her contemporary landscape paintings explore the underlying structure of natural forms and the connection between landscape, memory and the subconscious. Sumptuous, dramatic colour combinations and flattened perspectives are a hallmark of her painting practice.
Karyn was raised in Brisbane and studied art at Queensland College of Art in 1989. Following graduation, she was employed for several years with leading international design agency, Minale Tattersfield as a graphic designer. During that time she developed strong compositional skills, an exceptional eye for colour and detail and a discipline that is evident in her painting today.
Since relocating to the north coast of NSW in 1995, Karyn has exhibited her contemporary landscape paintings in many group exhibitions and competitions both within Australia and overseas, and held several solo exhibitions. Her works are housed in public and private collections worldwide.
ARTIST STATEMENT
"I am inspired by the beauty, complexity and vulnerability of the natural world. I paint imaginary landscape paintings, composed from layers of simplified forms I have observed in nature. I usually produce a series of paintings about a particular place. After spending time in the field, I return to the studio to paint, blending memory and observation to capture the atmosphere of the place that inspires the work, rather than detailing any specific view.
My recent artworks comment on our impact on the natural world, and are inspired by the area where I have been living and working, in the far north of NSW, in a pocket of remnant rain-forest. In these recent artworks, I have depicted the landscape with elements removed to encourage the viewer to consider their absence. Natural features reveal their vulnerability as transparent layers, or are painted white to symbolically remove them from the landscape. I have divided the landscapes with straight lines, representing our tendency to segment and consume the land, and the paintings themselves are also divided into diptych or triptych formats to further support this concept of division.
I hope my artwork might encourage people to consider and respect the natural world "
